Two children are being treated for gunshot wounds after a neighbor forced his way into an apartment and opened fire, hitting them, fatally shooting their grandmother, a dog and himself, the Hampden District Attorney’s Office said. At about 2:40 p.m. Monday, Springfield police responded to a first-floor apartment at 174 Berkshire Ave. for a report of shots fired. Arriving officers found the body of Victor Nieves, 34, on the floor, the body of Kim Fairbanks, 52, and the body of a dog, investigators said. Officers found three children, two of whom had been shot, in a bedroom, investigators said. The siblings — ages 5, 10 and 12 — were taken to Baystate Medical Center. The 10-year-old girl was shot and flown to Boston Children’s Hospital, where she remained in critical condition Tuesday. A 12-year-old girl was shot and remains at Baystate Medical Center in stable condition. The 5-year-old boy was not physically harmed. Springfield police said Nieves, who lived in the upstairs apartment of the multi-family home, forcibly entered through his neighbor’s front door and began shooting at the family before turning the gun on himself. Fairbanks was the children’s grandmother.“I remain deeply saddened by this tragic attack, and I am profoundly sorry for these children and their family members. This is unequivocally one of the most heinous and cowardly acts to which I’ve had to bear witness as District Attorney,” Hampden District Attorney Anthony D. Gulluni said. “My heart goes out to the parents of these children and the family and loved ones of Ms. Fairbanks.”The investigation is ongoing.
